Announcement

This wiki has become a target for massive, outrageous, ungodly amounts of spam. For this reason, the free and easy account creation has been shut off. If you would like a wiki account feel free to reach out in the #wiki channel in the zero mission discord channel. We are happy to let anyone edit and contribute, it's just unfortunate that the spam has made this extra step necessary.

To combat the spam I've put some extreme firewall rules in place, one of which just flat out blocks all access to any Special or User related pages. If you already have a wiki account and cannot log in because the User page is blocked, just let me know and I'll get you whitelisted.

Aside from pointing a camera at your Gameboy, you can imagine it's pretty tricky to record quality GBA footage for your speedruns. The most common solution is to use the Gameboy Player attachment on a Gamecube so you can record the Gamecube's footage just like any other console. There are a variety of solutions to get this working, and to start I'll share a link to Tupto's guide on SRC that has some great information in it: https://www.speedrun.com/fusion/guide/wf5aa

Your two main options for using the Gameboy Player are to either use the official Disc that comes with it, or running a software called Gameboy Interface (a.k.a. GBI). More info on GBI can be found here: https://www.gc-forever.com/wiki/index.php?title=Game_Boy_Interface.

The Disc is nice because it "just works", and if you're lucky enough to have the disc then that's all you need. The major downside to using the disc is that it's got some input lag which may affect your gameplay.

GBI can be tricky because it requires some more steps to get set up, but once you get GBI running you should end up with a better experience with better looking video quality and reduced input lag. One way to get GBI running is to use an Action Replay. I personally don't have an Action Replay, so if anyone who does wants to update this page and replace this sentence with an actual description of how it works, that can be helpful, but for now I'll say I hear it should be as easy as just copying GBI onto the Action Replay and it boots right up.

Another way to get GBI running is to copy it into a regular Gamecube Memory Card along with a game save exploit that tricks a regular Gamecube game into loading GBI. To do this, you will need a Wii that has homebrew installed, and I've had success following the guide in this video https://youtu.be/Y3jq8dVe2ug. Once your Wii has homebrew, use it to install Gamecube Memory Manager, a.k.a. GCMM, found here: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/GCMM. Now that you have GCMM, use it to copy over your game save exploit and GBI from an SD card over to a regular Gamecube Memory Card, and now that Memory Card can be used to trick whichever game you chose to boot into GBI.

If you're starting completely fresh, the Action Replay is very likely the easiest way to get going. In my situation I already had a Wii and extra memory cards and a gamecube game that has a save exploit for it, so it was cheaper for me to use everything I had instead of buying an Action Replay. Whichever option you choose should get you running on a console and ready to speedrun with recorded footage.

The rest of this page will more or less recap that same information here in wiki form.

Bizhawk is currently the only accepted Emulator for running Real Time speedruns, you can get Bizhawk here: http://tasvideos.org/BizHawk.html. The reason only Bizhawk is allowed is because it is the only emulator so far that has been tested and verified by the community to run at the same speed as consoles, and only as long as the GBA Bios has been imported into Bizhawk. Any other emulator that's been tested so far has been shown to run slightly faster, mainly from door transitions being sped up by a few frames per door which can add up to about a minute faster per hour.

Getting the latest version is preferred, but any version is acceptable for running the game except for versions 2.3.3 and 2.4 which are not allowed due to coming with a beta version of the MGBA core which has been known to show some issues. An updated version of that version of MGBA was added in 2.4.1 and every version after that has appeared fine so far (currently 2.6.2 is the latest at the time of writing this).

If you don't care about the real time speedrun and just want to post your game time to the leaderboard, you can use any emulator for just the game time. While the inaccuracies may speed up door load times, they don't speed up the actual gameplay and the in-game timer is not affected by the load times being faster. So with this in mind you can still compare your game time with other runner's game times on the leaderboard even if you don't want to use bizhawk or find a copy of the GBA Bios.

This setup has a high chance of gathering all the bugs from the 2nd and 3rd hive to follow you to the lower half of the room, leaving you the freedom to cross the upper half without too many issues. There is a random chance that the bugs will still fly up in your way and ruin the room, that's just the randomness that makes hive room such a troublsome room.
Brinstar Super
Any%
This is the only super missile located in Brinstar, this trick is useful because allows Samus to take this tank faster than the intended way, this trick is slower than doing the zebetite skip without it, but it makes Tourian much safer, also with this missile, we don't need to do the zebetite skip, we have almost enough missiles to finish Mother Brain room if we farm 2 more missiles in the room. (Red rinka missile drop rate is increased in that room)

To perform this trick, Samus has to store a speedboost, and do series of tight platforming, and then Morph Ball Shinespark (ballspark) to the left.

100%
There are a couple different ways to grab this Super Missile in 100%. The fastest way is to press down to store your spark right after you kill the ripper in the shortcut room, lay a bomb to open the path, and grab the missile at the same time. This method especially saves more time if you've done the Early Brinstar route because you don't need to backtrack into the shortcut and you can go straight to Long Beam after grabbing the Super Missile. Two of the safer methods of this trick involve holding down either during the transition into the shortcut room so that you can ball spark into the Super Missile room after the rippers move away from you, or storing your spark later in the shortcut room so that you can roll into the next room and spend more time setting up your position to ballspark into the Super Missile room. There is another way to perform this ballspark and collect the missile at the same time, but it requires an extra windup animation to do an additional ballspark inside the shortcut room.

Fastest Method

Late Method

Slowest Method

Charge Spark
In 100% or if you're doing Kraid-First Any%, you will have barely enough space to get a shinespark after leaving the morph shortcut and running across the Charge Worm's area. If you ask around you may find different ways of setting it up, my preferred starting position is to jump straight up out of the morph tunnel and shoot the door on the way up, and wait until I'm just about landed before pressing forward. This gives me the most room to get the spark without spending too much time lining myself up at the start.

Storing the spark is all about timing, it's common to fail the strat just by failing to press down where it seems obvious to do so. This is the hardest part of the trick, once you have it stored the first time you just need to be deliberate in your movement to recharge on the two slopes, bomb the passageway open, drop onto the platform and activate the spark to save a couple seconds on your run.

It is slightly faster to activate the spark midair, but this comes with the risk of falling into the acid and having to backtrack around if you fail to activate it.

Ice Cream Spark
Named after the Ice Beam room which is immediately after this spark, this is one of the toughest shinesparks to pull off in the game. The window for climbing the first room and recharging on the slope is very tight, and the room for activating the spark itself is just about pixel perfect. Too low and you'll bonk the platform, too high and you'll clip into the ceiling and bonk without traveling anywhere.

This spark is used in the 100% run when doing the original Norfair route, you do not have the opportunity do attempt this spark in the Newfair route.

Mapo Ice Cream Spark
There is an extended version of this spark which is used in the 100% Map Completion category.

Shinebreak
Used in the 100% run on the way to Hi Jump. Saves a second or two in Normal Mode, saves a bit more time in Hard Mode because without this spark you have to wait longer for the harder enemies to move out of your way before getting Hi Jump.

Money Spark
Also written as $park, this shinespark was named after a donation bounty sent by Kirbymastah during an ESA run. This spark is very hard to pull off because of the random enemy patterns underneath a 1 tile wide gap. Your options are to either spin jump into the gap to kill the enemies with screw attack, or walk into the gap and fire a missile straight down. The missile strat will not work if both enemies are underneath you, and since their patterns are random and you don't have time to see them and react, the missile strat is more of a yolo strat. You have to make sure to fall all the way down the room and spark into the lower half of the door, if you spark too high you will miss the slope in the next room. Getting this spark successfully saves about a second.

Newfair Spark
One of the routing choices for 100% involve going down into Norfair first and saving the Ice Beam as one of the last items, and this route is called the Newfair route. There is a difficult shinespark which saves enough time to make this route a viable option, so because this trick ended up defining the route it became known as the Newfair Spark.

After collecting the Energy Tank behind the caterpillar miniboss, you need to run back enough to have enough room to get a speedbooster going into the next room. I like to jump into the corner of the ceiling the drops to the left because it sets up a nice consistent distance that doesn't require running all the way to the left. You need to be holding a charge shot going into the door, so you can open the door early by firing a missile at it and then holding charge, or you can time a beam shot right as samus's sprite touches the first purple plant behind the caterpillar's pupa and holding charge when the shot is fired. You don't need a fully charged beam entering the door, just enough of a charge started that samus will automatically fire the shot when you enter the next room after letting go of B during the door transition.

When you enter the next room after letting go of B during the door transition, samus should automatically fire a shot that breaks the block in the way and you should start your speedbooster animation around the same time if you did the ceiling setup. Here you need to perform a Shine Break by pressing down to store your shinespark late enough that the speedblock in the floor breaks, but early enough that you don't fall off the ledge. The next step is collecting the missile below because you can't shoot the missile block behind it until it's collected. I like to press down twice when storing the shinespark so that I morph on the ledge above, and roll off the ledge and springball into the missile.

After collecting the missile you need to roll to the right where you can stand up again, face left and shoot out the missile block, then run off the ledge to the right and spark straight up. You need to shoot this missile block because it allows you to fall back to this area later without having to break the speedblocks or climb into the long shortcut room that gets used in any%.

Norfair Spaceboost
This trick is used during the cleanup portion of the 100% run. There is a room with a Green Door and it has a speedblock in the floor, which will break and cause you to fall and lose your speedbooster if you run over it. The safe way to continue your speed into the next long room is to store your shinespark before this speedblock, walk into the next room, and active it in there. This is slow because you need to stop moving, and then deal with the windup and bonk animations of the spark itself.

To do the spaceboost you need to fire your super missile as soon as you enter the room, and then jump shortly afterwards. Don't jump too soon or your position won't line up right with the blocks above your head and you'll jump into the side of them. If you delay your first jump a tiny bit, your first jump hits the blocks above you and your second jump hits the ceiling right in front of the door. With this setup you should be entering the next long room while falling, and you need to do a third full space jump soon enough that you don't hit the pillar in front of the door. Once you're this far, you just need to mash A at a steady rhythm to stay close to the ceiling.

If you're already familiar with Super Metroid's Zeb Skip, there is a similar concept with a similar result in Zero Mission. The biggest difference for Zero Mission is the trick is much harder and with a smaller return on investment. Shoutouts to ZX497 for the original finding of Zero Mission's zeb skip.

There are 4 zebitites in the Mother Brain room, and each one takes 7 missiles to destroy. With the optimal ammo of 50 missiles and 4 supers missiles, you normally would destroy the first two zebitites, go back and refill in the previous room, and then come back with just enough ammo to destroy the last two zebitites and defeat Mother Brain.

If you perform the zeb skip, you don't have to destroy the first one and the third one doesn't spawn, which means you enter the room with max ammo and don't have to refill because you only destroy the 2nd and 4th zebitites.

The way to perform the zeb skip is to run into the room and immediately drop to the floor and hug the left wall. Freeze the rinka that spawns in the wall so that it doesn't touch you and knock you around. You'll see a rinka come at you from the top left of the screen, jump and freeze it at a point where the top of the rinka is barely above the floor. I don't yet know the exact window for getting this correct, but if the rinka is too low and lower than the floor than you can't stand on it for the next part, and if the rinka is too high and way above the floor, you can still get the hover state in the next part but you won't clip through the zebitite.

Once the rinka is frozen, refreeze the rinka in the wall next to you so that it stays frozen longer and gives you more time to do the trick, and then run up and jump onto the rinka you froze in the platform. You need to place a morph bomb high enough that it doesn't kill the rinka, but still low enough that it will make you bomb jump while you're morphed on the rinka. Some people do a spring ball to set it up, I personally do a normal jump and a mid-air morph because that works in the 9% category where you won't have springball.

This is the hard part, you need to unmorph on the same frame the bomb explodes. If you unmorph and never move, you did it too early. If you see the bomb push samus off a ground a little bit before you unmorphed, you did it too late. If done correctly, you'll be in a hover state where Samus's legs are dangling underneath her. (You can practice this on any frozen enemy in the game to get in this hover state). While hovering, hold left and you should slide right through the zebitite.
After you land, run up against the zeb, turn around, and hold down so that you're crouched while still holding down. Wait for the rinka below you to move towards you, and then time a jump so that you freeze the rinka and its top half is just barely above the platform. If you're holding down the entire time, this is much easier than trying to press down after jumping. While still in midair after freezing the rinka, tap down again to morph and lay a bomb high enough that it won't destroy the rinka.

Gate clip is used in the 100% Normal speedrun to skip a longer section of the Mothership between the Glass Tube and Early Power Bombs location. Normally you would continue to the top right of the ship and navigate some extra rooms to reach the early power bombs, but performing the gate clip allows you to skip that section completely and reach the early power bombs through much fewer rooms. The downside to gate clip is the pirate manipulation takes quite a bit of time to setup, and you till take 6 hits during the setup which makes the required refill later on take a little bit longer. There is also a frame perfect input required to complete the clip which makes it very hard to perform consistently. Overall this clip should save about ~10 seconds off the run.

The way to set up the clip is to run into the room with the alarm on and grab the right side of the floating platform as soon as you can. Do not hold any directions or any other buttons after grabbing the ledge, just let Samus hang there with her arm pointing down. If done correctly, the pirate will run into the room and knock samus off the platform, do one jump against the gate before turning around. While you have iframes from the first hit, you will want to also run against the gate and turn left. At this point you and the pirate will both be facing left and it'll start shooting at samus continously, and you want to let go of all buttons during this time and take 4 more hits from the pirate, for a total of 5 hits up to this point. After you take the 5th hit, start holding right during the hit animation so that when you land you immediately turn right and run past the pirate. You should have enough iframes to make it back to the gate, at which point the pirate's subpixels will be manipulated into making this clip work. The pirate should turn around and hit you for a 6th and final time, at which point you look straight up and fire your beam once to freeze it.

Once the pirate is frozen, tap down to make Samus crouch, and then tap right for a few frames to make her step into the gate. This clip will push her entirely forward into the gate and will also push her down one tile. Once you're in this position, tap Right and Jump at the same time to make Samus spin jump, and press Jump again after exactly 8 frames to make her clip below the floor. This is the frame perfect input, if you time your second jump incorrectly you'll be stuck inside the gate in a crouched position and unable to move until the gate opens. You can kill the pirates in the room to open the gate and reset the room to try again.

Some advice for pressing jump twice after exactly 8 frames is to watch the blinking minimap in the top right of the screen. Scotty found that blinking animation happens to blink at exactly 8 frames, so you can watch it and try to time your jumps with it. Another tip is to set a metronome to 450bpm and tap along to the beats. Once way I found to do this is by using metronom.us, setting it to 225bpm and doubled it with the eighth note setting.

Nick: Created page with "Ridley takes 50 regular missiles to kill, or substitute 5 missiles for every super missile you have to use on him. The small fireballs he shoots to start the fight will do 15..."

Ridley takes 50 regular missiles to kill, or substitute 5 missiles for every super missile you have to use on him.

The small fireballs he shoots to start the fight will do 15 damage, the larger fireballs he shoots for the rest of the fight will do 30 damage, touching ridley's body also does 30 damage, and touching his tail will deal 50 damage.

In most situations except for low% categories, you will want to just run into ridley and fire all your supers and missiles into him because you can kill him before he kills you. In 100% this is very trivial and you can kill him before he even leaves the ground. In Any% this takes a little bit of practice to do with 1 etank, you want to shoot him when the fight starts and wait to run into him when he starts spitting the tiny fireballs so you tank less damage and can kill him before he kills you. You can also grab the optional energy tank from behind his unknown item and make the fight free at that point.

Kirby's Air Ride a.k.a. Ridley's Unrage
There is a strat to skip the tiny fireball phase and make ridley immediately fly into the air, and this is done by forcing him to turn around several times at a very precise timing and point in the room. The easiest setup to make this work is to enter the room while morphed and roll far enough right that you get some speed while you roll to the left to start the fight. Keep holding left while Ridley drops on top of you, and try to unmorph while you're in the air during the knockback animation you get from getting hit by ridley. While in midair, you want land to the left and fire a super, turn around after landing and fire another super or two, and if done correctly ridley should look like he's hesitated for a second and then fly into the air. This trick is very precise and takes some playing around with the timing to see what works for you.

This strat also does not immediately save much time by itself. The first benefit to skipping the tiny fireball phase is being able to shoot more missiles at ridley without being interrupted by the damage you're taking in the normal strat, and you also have an opportunity to farm the large fireballs depending on what pattern you get. The next benefit to this strat is you should save a lot more health when the fight is finished, which will make the refill slightly faster later on after killing kraid because you have less health that needs to be refilled.

Example clip created by CScottyW:

Low%
There is a kind of a dance you will get into with Ridley in order to survive the low% fight with only 5 missiles and no extra energy tanks. During the fight ridley will hover back and forth over the platform, and you want to stay underneath him between his front claw and his tail. As long as you don't jump, this is 100% safe to stay directly below Ridley and he will never hurt you as long as you don't move into his front claw or his tail.

For the fight, you will need to wait for ridley to fire his large fireballs and farm those to refill your missiles. There isn't much else to the fight besides surviving, farming, and shooting when you can.

The only other detail to watch out for in low% is that ridley will go into an enraged phase when he takes 10 missiles worth of damage. You'll know he's enrages when he suddenly fires a burst of fireballs and starts pogo'ing the ground with his tail and chasing after you more aggressively. This 10 missile counters gets reset every time he fires his regular fireballs, so if you're really good with your farming and missile management and manage to fire 8 or 9 missiles into him with more left over, you will want to just wait for another round of fireballs before firing more missiles. This is one of those situations that you don't generally need to worry about until you start getting really good at the fight, so if you're able to enrage ridley in low% then that means you're doing good damage.

This trick is mainly used for 100% Hard mode as part of the Very Cool Route™.

This only saves time in hard mode after performing the early power bombs clip, because you'll reach this area with only 1 power bomb in that situation. In order to proceed you would normally need to blow up the glass tube, back track to some other save station in Chozodia or the Mother Ship, refill your 1 power bomb back, and then return to blow up one of the power bomb blocks on either side of the tube. This trick saves that time by allowing us to immediately grab a 2nd power bomb without having to backtrack, at the cost of 400 health and some time to manipulate the pirate's subpixels.

The setup for this clip starts with blowing up the tube, and you want to leave and reset the glass tube room after it's blown up in order to get a consistent setup for the pirate. The fastest way to do this is to leave as soon as the explosion reaches the tube and skip the animation of it blowing up. I like to leave the door closed and let the power bomb open the door before holding right, this pretty much guarantees you won't leave too early before the tube explodes. Once you've left and returned to the now broken tube, you need to continue running left, drop down to the lower platform and kill the pirates above you while running right, and fall to the area below in a way where you'll be falling to the right side of the lower ledge below.

There isn't much of a visual cue for this part that I know of, you just need to practice falling in the right place such that you'll be to the right of the lower ledge, and you can hold left and grab the ledge before landing. Once you're on the ledge, hold right and wait for the pirate to follow you down there and shoot you. After it shoots you, wait until you're really close to the ground and start a respin right before you land. The timing for the respin isn't too specific, just don't respin too soon or the setup won't work, you want to respin as late as you can.

After you land, morph immediately and wait for the pirate to jump over you and start shooting at you. The first shot should hit you and knock you up the hill a little bit, and then he'll fire two shots that miss. As soon as the 3rd shot passes over you, stand up and let the pirate run into you. This should knock you into the wall, and you can turn left once your knockback animation finishes. Let the pirate shoot you one more time and get up in your face, freeze it when it stops moving, crouch, hold right, and you should be clipped into the wall and running into the next room.

Most often what goes wrong for me is spinning too soon after taking the first shot, or standing up too late after the 3rd shot goes over samus while morphed. Doing either of these things wrong will cause the pirate to run in some other direction and if you've taken any damage at this point, you will need to go refill your health because you won't survive another attempt at the setup. If you get in this situation, just go left to refill in Chozodia and come back to this spot and use your 1 power bomb you just refilled to blow up the wall. You've already lost all the time you could've saved but this way you can at least finish your run with about 1 minute of timeloss from failing this trick.

This clip makes use of manipulating the space pirate's subpixels combined with the properties of frozen enemy hitboxes being able to push Samus around in unique ways, and sets all of this up in order to clip Samus's position exactly 1 subpixel inside of a crumble block that is normally only accessible from the right side. Once inside of the crumble block, attempting to jump with springball will trick the game into thinking you're on top of the crumble block which will cause it to crumble away and let you into the tunnel from the left side.

There are two ways to set up the clip, one takes 4 hits from the space pirate and is very simple and easy to perform while the other method only takes 2 hits from the pirate and requires some more precise timing to get the setup to work.

4 Hit Setup
In order to do the 4 hit setup you need to run into the room while the alarm is on, and let go of all inputs during the transition. Once the room loads you should be standing in front of the door while the pirate comes in, and he'll immediately shoot you. As soon as you get shot, hold Right in midair so that as soon as you land you'll start running towards the right wall. Once you're up against the wall and still holding right, hold Jump so that you spin jump and your screw attack breaks the bomb block on the floor. Continue holding Jump and Right until you're at the peak of your jump, and then morph so that you land on the pirate in morph ball form. If done correctly, the pirate will start crawling into the tunnel, and you should roll into the tunnel with it. When the pirate crawls out of the tunnel and turns around, you should get your 4th hit from it and that's your time to roll out just enough that you can unmorph and freeze it. Once frozen, you can morph back into the hole and press Jump again to attempt a springball jump, and this should destroy the crumble block and let you in.

Things that can go wrong:

* The pirate climbs up the wall instead of crawling into the hole. This happens when your first jump is too early. It's not about jumping as soon as possible, there is a slight timing to it.
* You shoot and the pirate doesn't freeze. This happens when you roll too far left, you need to just barely roll out of the tunnel enough that you can unmorph and not much further.
* You did everything correctly and froze the pirate but you can't break the crumble block with springball jumps. This happens when the pirate's subpixels are not correct, which if you followed the setup can usually only happen if you waited too long to freeze it. Try freezing it faster after you take your 4th hit from it and you should get it.

2 Hit Setup
If you're comfortable with the 4 hit setup, the 2 hit setup should look very familiar with some extra movement added to dodge the pirate. As soon as the room loads you will be able to see the pirate behind you stopping to shoot at you. Once he lines up his shot, run off the platform and try to land about where you would've landed if you had been shot. This dodges the 1st hit and enables the rest of the same setup to happen. After the laser passes over your head, run up to the wall and do the same spinjump to break the crumble block, but hold left at the peak of your jump so you land behind the pirate instead of on it. This dodges the 2nd hit, but the timing is tricky. You need to wait long enough that it'll crawl into the tunnel, do it too soon and he'll climb the wall instead and you need to reset the room to try again. After that if he's crawled into the tunnel, you can morph and continue the rest of the same setup and take the last 2 hits from it to finish the clip.

Mecha Ridley is split into two phases each with their own health. The first phase is with the glass covering his weak spot which takes 10 missiles to break, or 2 super missiles. Once the glass breaks he'll enter his second phase which takes another 18 missiles, or 4 super missiles, to finish him off. If you've collected 100% of the items before starting the fight, Mecha will have triple his health on both phases and deal double damage.

Mecha has 3 attacks which he can do in any order and sometimes do 2 or even all 3 attacks simultaneously. He can swipe his claw at you, he can fire 3 missiles off his back which track samus, or he can spit fireballs. Once you've broken the glass on his chest and enter the 2nd phase of the fight, he will no longer spit fireballs but instead fire lasers out of his eyes.

Any%
In any% you should have at least 6 super missiles for Mecha. The main idea is to fire all 6 into his weak spot to kill him as fast as you can, which there are safer ways and riskier but faster ways to do so. The fastest way to kill him is to do a full jump right before the music starts, this causes him to raise his head and expose his weak point faster. Then fire all 6 supers in rapid succession to immediately kill him. This strat is risky because there's a random chance Mecha will do nothing and let you kill them, and also a random chance he'll swipe or spit fireballs and cause you to miss your supers. This is known as the YOLO kill because of the risk involved.

The Controlled YOLO kill is a similar but safer strat where you start the fight in the exact same way but only fire 1 super missile. If you pause for a second after the first shot, mecha will be locked into one of 3 patterns which you can then react to. He could either immediately swipe, he could wait a second and then swipe, or he could spit fireballs. Once you see what he's doing you can safely fire the rest of your supers while reacting to his attack.

If the initial jump to start the fight is too hard to get down, the safest way to fight mecha is just to stay crouched in the corner and wait for him to swipe his claw and raise his head. This is a random chance for how long it takes him to do this, so you could get a pretty quick fight if you're lucky or you could be sitting there for 10+ seconds waiting for a swipe. This is the safest strat because once he swipes you're pretty much guaranteed to have a long enough opening to kill him with all 6 supers.

100%
The 100% fight is exactly the same as any% except it's going to take 6 supers to break the glass and another 12 to finish him off, so 18 supers total to kill mecha. You can do a similar YOLO strat to try and kill him as fast as possible if you're feeling risky like so:

Or you can always take a safer approach and fire a few supers to start the fight and wait to see and react to what his attacks are. In 100% you should have full health and plenty of ammo to eventually kill him.

9%
This is one of the toughest fights in a 9% run. The best advice for this fight is to practice practice practice and get used to all of his attacks and patterns and know how to dodge them. If you can be comfortable enough to just sit in mecha's room and hang out with him without getting hit by any of his attacks, you can eventually kill him. There are a lot of small nuances to Mecha's behavior that don't really matter in any other situation besides the low% fights:

In Mecha's first phase he can occasionally shoot fireballs at you. This is mostly a waste of time because it's very difficult to return fire without taking damage, but it is possible to prevent him from shooting fireballs. I've noticed in my practice that as long as you have 0 missiles, mecha won't shoot fireballs, so while the glass is still on his chest you will always want to fire all your ammo at him as soon as you collect it. You may see some instances where you'll fire your last missile and mecha will immediately shoot fireballs when you're at 0 missiles, but I believe this is when he has already had his fireball attack queued up and ready to go before you ran out of ammo, so you need to be quicker in firing your missiles to prevent that.

If you stay against the left and crouched, his claw can't reach you so you're completely safe from the claw attack by itself. You can usually shoot all 3 missiles he'll fire at you from this position, but sometimes they'll swerve at you in a way where you need to jump and fire straight down to dodge them. This gets tricky if he swipes and missiles at the same time because you'll need to time your jump to either be above the claw before it swipes, or jump after the claw is on the ground. Another thing to watch out for is if he swipes right before the missiles reach you, his claw can overlap the missiles and prevent you from shooting them. In this case you'll want to jump after the claw is on the ground and shoot the missiles as they swerve underneath you.

You may notice Mecha is slowly crawling towards you during the fight, especially when he swipes. If you hit him with a missile, he'll back up away from you. This becomes important during the 2nd phase with his laser eyes because it's easier to dodge the lasers when they're farther away. The lasers always fire at the same 3 angles, a steep angled down, a slight angled down, and straight ahead, which means the lasers will end up landing in the same places as long as his head is in the same position. Most of the time Mecha's head is either lowered all the way or raised all the way, he doesn't often just leave it in between. If his head is lowered all the way, and mecha has crawled closer to you, then the laser won't hit you in the corner. Also if mecha's head is raised all the way up, and he's pushed back as far back as he can go, the laser also can't hit you if you're morphed in the corner. So with this in mind it's usually to your advantage to try and keep mecha pushed back as often as possible and keep his head raised by jumping near the ceiling whenever possible, all of this is to make the lasers easier to dodge. It can get really hectic with the lasers and claw swipes at the same time, and the best ways to dodge everything is either to be space jumping above the claw and ready to jump above or below any high laser shots, or just stay morphed on the ground against the wall and roll to the right when you see a low laser shot going at the corner.

While this item not essentially required to complete the game, there is an unbreakable vine blocking the entrance to Norfair that cannot be removed except by collecting the power grip item. This vine just disappears on its own once power grip is collected. It is speculated that this requirement is not specifically just to force Power Grip on the player, but this also forces you to collect the Plasma Beam Unknown Item in order to get to Power Grip, and since Plasma Beam is required to kill the last two metal pirates at the very end of the game, this was the game's way of ensuring you collected the Plasma Beam.

The Wave Beam enables your beam to shoot through solid objects, but not enemies. It also greatly increases the size of your beam, giving an effect that looks like multiple beam shots layered on top of one another, allowing you to shoot blocks that are 3 tiles high in front of Samus. This makes the Wave Beam a required item for some specific rooms that require running while shooting blocks at multiple heights in order to activate your speed booster, such as the heated room before the Imago Larva fight or the Speed Jump Missiles in Ridley.

The Wave Beam is intended to be collected after the Ice Beam according to the game's design, but it is possible to collect the Wave Beam early. If you do so, the beam is still a faint white/grey color, suggesting that it really was intended to be picked up with the Ice Beam and not before the Ice Beam.

The speedbooster is an ability that activates after Samus has been running for a set amount of time. This is mainly used to break speed blocks which block paths and items.
This stored speedbooster energy is known as a shinespark, and can be activated by pressing A while Samus is standing or morphed and not moving, or while Samus is falling and not spinning or morphed. After pressing A, you will have a short moment to press any direction and Samus will spark in that direction. You can spark left, right, straight up, or diagonally up.
